Being a Dentist is a dream come true for me. I love what I do because my profession is a mix of science, art, engineering, and a lot of compassion. Bringing all of this together to help a patient is extremely rewarding. I believe what my team and I do changes people’s lives for the better on so many levels.
Education and Experience
Initially I studied a Bachelor of Arts and Bachelor of Science degree at Sydney University, majoring in Philosophy and Neuroscience. It was in my third year during the five-year course that I decided to pursue dentistry.
I made the major decision to drop out and pursue my dream of becoming a dentist.
I then went on to study a Bachelor of Oral Health at University of Newcastle and loved the challenges, solidifying my decision to undertake a degree in Dentistry. Immediately I loved Newcastle and it’s laid back atmosphere – coming from Sydney it is such a well-kept secret!
I then went on to study and graduate with my Bachelor of Dental Surgery at James Cook University in Cairns, where I was awarded the Bank of Queensland Scholarship.
Since returning to Newcastle I have been continuing the lifelong process of clinical development and learning.
Outside the Office
I come from a large family and place a lot of emphasis on family relationships and I love to travel and am a self-confessed geek.
I love a good coffee and am an avid fan of the Jets and Liverpool FC. Trivia, reading, and spending time with my nieces is also up there.
In the Community at Large
Being an active member of the community is very important to me, whether the immediate community or the larger community. Being presented with the prestigious Bank of Queensland Scholarship allowed me to travel to other communities to learn, work, and impart some of my dental knowledge to various demographic groups. Now that Newcastle is my new home I am looking forward to taking up where I left off earlier in my career.
I also travelled to Mexico in 2013 to study the public health system – mainly the disparity between private and public health services. The experience was very rewarding and has left a mark on me to this day. If you’re interested, I would love to tell you all about it when you come in!
I have spent time working with rural and remote communities in Central Australia, including a number of indigenous communities, to provide oral health care. As part of this, I helped pilot a public oral health program delivering tailored advice to parents of young children in the region.
Following my time in Central Australia, I also worked with QLD health in Townsville, providing dental services to public patients as well as working in the gaol, school dental service, aged care, and the oral cancer clinic. This was an incredible experience which has given me a very broad range of skills that I would not have received in a more ‘typical’ work environment.
Prior to moving to Newcastle, I spent some time volunteering my skills in Fiji with James Cook University, providing dental care and advice to rural communities around Suva and Lautoka. This experience was incredible and exposed me to a range of diseases and situations that many dentists do not regularly encounter, certainly not something I will forget!
