What Are Dental Braces?
Usually simply called “braces,” dental braces are specialised orthodontic appliances that use a combination of brackets and wires to gradually move teeth into their optimal positions through gentle, controlled pressure.
An orthodontist might recommend braces for a child, teen or adult to help with misaligned or crowded teeth. Braces can also help correct overbites, underbites and problems with the jaw.
Dr. Matthew Vaughan is Newcastle’s leading orthodontic specialist for children and teens. Passionate about the benefits of high-quality orthodontic treatment for young people, Dr. Vaughan combines advanced technology with personalised care to ensure families receive effective care tailored to their unique situations.

We Offer the Leading Choices in Braces Treatment
At Live Life Smiling, we offer the two leading types of dental braces from American Orthodontics—metal braces and ceramic (clear) braces.
Metal Braces
A well established and effective orthodontic treatment, metal braces use stainless steel brackets and wires to provide sufficient force to align the teeth in even the most complex presentations. Modern metal braces use smaller, more comfortable brackets than traditional older style.
Ceramic (Clear) Braces
Clear ceramic brackets blend naturally with your child’s teeth, offering a more discreet look than metal braces. We offer ceramic braces at no extra charge for suitable patients who prefer this option. Ceramic braces can be a good option for young people who are self-conscious about the appearance of metal braces.
Potential Benefits of Dental Braces
Improved confidence and self-esteem
Better oral health and clearer speech
Enhanced jaw function
Reduced future dental problems
Signs Braces are Needed
Crowded, crooked or widely spaced teeth
Bite problems (overbite, underbite or crossbite)
Mouth breathing or snoring (may indicate jaw problems)
Facial asymmetry or jaw misalignment
Remember, not all orthodontic issues are visible. Some of the most important developments happen beneath the surface, which is why professional assessment is crucial.
When is the Best Time to Get Braces?
The Australian Society of Orthodontics recommends children visit an orthodontist by age 7–10. This isn’t because treatment always starts this early, but because early intervention can significantly improve long–term outcomes (and reduce overall cost).
Avoiding preventable problems
Future problems with bite, jaw or speech may be completely avoided with early intervention.
Fixing issues when they are small
In general, the earlier an issue is identified, the easier it is to fix with less invasive treatment.
Reducing cost of future treatment
Addressing orthodontic problems early usually works out cheaper in the long run
Peace of mind
Whether treatment is required or not, you will have clarity and an actionable plan for your child’s oral health.

Schedule an Early Orthodontic
Assessment Today
Dr. Matthew Vaughan offers a specialised Early Orthodontic Assessment for children and teens of all ages. After the assessment you’ll receive a written quote and treatment plan, along with a copy of all scans and records to take home. A second consultation appointment is available at no charge if you still have questions, and the cost of the assessment is credited toward treatment if you begin within 30 days.
Choosing the Right Type of Braces
Every young person’s orthodontic needs are unique. The “best” type of braces depends on various factors, such as the complexity of issues, your child’s age and lifestyle, aesthetic preferences and treatment goals.
During your consultation at Live Life Smiling, Dr. Matthew Vaughan will:
- Thoroughly assess your child’s orthodontic needs.
- Explain all suitable treatment options
- Discuss the benefits and considerations of each approach
- Help you make an informed decision that aligns with your family’s priorities.

BRACES VS. CLEAR ALIGNERS
Clear aligners offer an alternative choice to braces for some children, teens and adults. Aligners have the benefit of being less visible than braces. However, they aren’t suitable for all cases and can be a more expensive treatment option.
Braces excel at:
• Complex tooth movements and bite corrections
• Treating severe crowding or spacing issues
• Working continuously without compliance concerns
• May be a more cost-effective treatment option
Clear aligners work for:
• Mild to moderate alignment issues
• People who prioritise aesthetics during treatment
• Teens and adults who can commit to wearing aligners 20-22 hours daily
• Situations where removability is important for special events
At Live Life Smiling, we offer both braces and clear aligners at our orthodontic clinic in Newcastle. During your consultation, we’ll discuss all suitable options, ensuring you understand the pros and cons of each before making any decisions.
Process for Getting Dental Braces in Newcastle
Initial Consultation
Our nurse takes a full dental history and comprehensive imaging. This is followed by a 30 minute consultation with Dr. Matthew Vaughan and 20 minute consultation with our treatment coordinator. You will receive a written treatment plan and quote covering all costs.
Bond-up Appointment
Braces are put on the teeth as individually required. This takes approximately 45 minutes in total.
Adjustment & Monitoring
Attend the clinic every 4–8 weeks so we can adjust and monitor the braces. This continues until the teeth are realigned and in the optimum position.
Braces Removal & Retention
Braces are removed and a fixed wire retainer or removable retainers are applied to ensure the teeth stay in their new position. We take photos to compare at subsequent appointments.
6–12 Monthly Reviews
Patients attend one or two times in the following year to ensure there are no problems or changes, then yearly or as required.
How much do braces cost?
The cost of braces varies based on individual needs, the type of braces selected, treatment complexity and the duration of treatment. At Live Life Smiling, we believe cost should never be a barrier to people receiving the orthodontic care they need. We’ll work with you to design a no-pressure treatment plan with clear pricing and flexible in-house payment plans if you need.
